Ancient Arts & Culture Multi-Day Itinerary

Day 1  - Your tour departs Phoenix at 7:00 am.  We visit the Wukoki ruin at Wupatki National Monument.  To stand on a rise in Wupatki National Monument is to understand that this area was once a busy community with structures on nearly every surrounding hilltop.  Sprawling ruins help to reveal possible lifestyles and activities of the people who left these monuments over 800 years ago.  Our hands on workshop on Flint Knapping will bring a personal interpretation of this ancient civilization.  Lunch  will be served at the Cameron Trading Post on the Navajo Reservation, on our way to the Betatakin Cliff Dwelling in Navajo National Monument.  Dinner and overnight are in Kayenta.

Day 2  - Today's location is a ruin system at Hovenweep National Monument. A famous tower at Hovenweep is the inspiration for the tower, built in the 1930's that now stands at Desert View Overlook at the Grand Canyon.  A Pottery workshop examines a common thread between many communities of the Anasazi era. The afternoon offers an exploration of the Anasazi Heritage Center.  Dinner and overnight in Cortez, Colorado.

Day 3  -  Today we visit Aztec Ruins National Monument.  Aztec can claim the most intact ruins in the area, with some reconstruction done over the last few decades. This monument gives a good idea of what is missing at some of the other sites on our tour. A Yucca Basketry workshop will be part of our Aztec experience.  Dinner and overnight will be in Durango, Colorado.

Day 4  -  Chaco Cultural National Historical Park was once home to astronomers.  Chaco boasts the tallest ruins in the area and a system of stellar observation can be seen in the designs of 5 story ruins.  A Plant Fiber Cordage workshop will be given today to enhance the experience and understanding of life at Chaco.   Tonight will be spent in the legendary El Rancho Hotel, where many movie icons from the 40's and 50's rested after a long day on the set.

Day 5  - Zuni Pueblo and ruins represent the oldest living community of our tour.  The Zuni were the first to encounter the Spainards in 1541 at the start of the Coronado expedition.  Our visit to Zuni offers a new perspective on ancient cultures as a continuous link to the past. After a Wild Plant Food workshop, we will make our way back to Phoenix through the White Mountain Apache Reservation for an early evening return.
